BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State University men's soccer team (3-2-1, 0-0-1) tied Indiana University (2-3-3, 0-0-1) 1-1 on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington in the Big Ten Season opener. It was the first time MSU has beaten or tied the Hoosiers since 1965, snapping a string of 30 losses. In addition, IU had not lost or tied a Big Ten match since 1996.
Early in the game, junior striker John Minagawa-Webster (Monroe) beat Hoosier goalkeeper Jay Nolly for the first goal of the contest. The goal was unassisted and it was Minagawa-Webster's team-best tying third goal of the season.
Indiana did not manage to tie the game until the 81:09 mark when an Indiana forward scored unassisted.
MSU goalkeeper Mike Robinson (Sr., Troy) stopped six shots in the game.
Next, the Spartans play at Valparaiso on Friday (September 26) at 3 p.m. EDT. After that MSU heads to Evanston, Ill. to face its next Big Ten foe, the Northwestern Wildcats, on Sunday (September 28).
