
Men's Tennis' McWilliams Advances To Main Draw

MADISON, Wis. - Michigan State sophomore Joseph McWilliams advanced to the main draw of the Big Ten Singles Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., on Friday, Nov. 12.
The top seed for the qualifying event, McWilliams, who received a bye in the first round, dropped Wisconsin's Jordan Raemisch in a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 victory. McWilliams, one of eight to advance to the main draw, will join teammates Brian Compton, Adam Monich and Nick Rinks, all of whom are freshmen, as well as seniors Cameron Marshall and Andrew Formanczyk.
In first-round action, junior Mike Brown defeated Northwestern's Justin Hoeveler, 6-3, 7-5. One of 32 athletes competing in round one, Brown's victory advanced him to the second round of qualifiers, where he was eliminated by Penn State's James Dwyer, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Also in the first round, Spartan sophomore Michael Flowers fell to Ohio State's Dominic Ozanne in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, (7-0), 6-3. In his debut effort at the conference singles indoor competition, freshman Bryan Karazia fell to Minnesota's Chi Pham, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Action continues tomorrow and Sunday, with two rounds of singles. Semifinals and finals will take place on Monday.
