EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State running back Jehuu Caulcrick, who ranked fourth on the team in rushing with 619 yards in 2004, has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team as selected by The Sporting News.
The 6-foot, 235-pound Caulcrick gained 619 yards on 113 carries and scored five touchdowns as a red-shirt freshman. The Findley Lake, N.Y., native rushed for a career-best 146 yards on 13 attempts in Michigan State's 49-14 victory over No. 4 Wisconsin, including a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter. His 59-yard run late in the fourth quarter against the Badgers set up MSU's final touchdown.
Caulcrick picked up 94 yards on 13 carries in MSU's 51-17 victory over No. 19 Minnesota, including TD runs of 18 and 10 yards. He produced 85 yards each vs. Illinois (career-best 16 rushes) and Notre Dame (15).
"Jehuu Caulcrick improved a lot during the course of the 2004 season," Spartan head coach John L. Smith said. "Jehuu is still learning how to play the (running back) position, so he's still a little rough around the edges.
"When he runs with the proper pad level, Jehuu can be a punishing runner. He also made a lot of progress as a pass protector. Jehuu isn't a polished running back yet, but he had a productive season that he can build upon in 2005."
Caulcrick joins two first-year players from Michigan - quarterback Chad Henne and running back Michael Hart - in the TSN Big Ten All-Freshman backfield.
