EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics opens the 2005 season with its annual Green and White meet on Saturday, Dec. 18 at noon. Competition will take place in the third-floor gym at Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
"We are very excited to get our season started," said MSU head coach Kathie Klages, who enters her 15th year leading the Spartans. "We have battled injuries throughout preseason, but we have gotten healthier as time has passed. We feel prepared at this point in time, which is good. Still, because of the injuries, we aren't sure about the team's consistency at this point. If we can stay healthy, I believe that we have the strongest gymnastics team that there has ever been at Michigan State University."
Lindsey Voth, the only senior on the 2004 squad, did not compete last season because of injury, so the Spartans return all active competitors this season. Top returnees include tri-captain junior Sarah Alexander and 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Victoria Iakounina. MSU also boasts an impressive group of freshman, sure to add to the team's depth this season.
Michigan State's first-regular season competition of 2005 will take place on Jan. 7, when the Spartans host Ball State, Denver and LSU for a quad-meet at Jenison Field House at 8 p.m.
