No. 24 MSU Gymnastics Wins Eagle Classic At Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. - - Sophomore co-captain Sarah Alexander posted a 39.400 in the all-around and freshman Victoria Iakounina finished second in the vault and uneven bars to lead Michigan State gymnastics to the Eagle Classic title at Eastern Michigan Saturday. MSU's 195.700 won the meet, while Ohio State finished second at 195.275. Host Eastern Michigan was third at 195.200 and Southeast Missouri State rounded out the competition at 194.150. As a team, the Spartans won vault with a 49.175 and floor with a score of 49.325.
Alexander was just 0.025 off her career best all-around score of 39.425, as she took second in the all-around competition at the meet. She tied with teammate Chayla HIll for the floor exercise title, and also tied with two Ohio State gymnasts, Kaylin Schlecht and Tiffanie Jahnke, for second place on beam. Alexander, Hill, Jahnke and EMU's Brooke Morari all recorded 9.900s for the floor title. Alexander, Schelcht and Jahnke each posted 9.875s on beam for the second-place finish on the event.
The share of the floor title marks the second consecutive meet in which Alexander has finished with a share of first place in the event.
On vault, Iakounina and teammate Kristen Coleman tied for second with 9.875s in the event. The score was a career high for Coleman. Alexander posted a 9.850, while sophomore Jaime Miles scored a 9.825. On bars, Iakounina also tied with Southeast Missouri's Ashley Goodwin for second, as both gymnasts scored 9.850. Jennifer Yarbrough turned in a score of 9.825 on bars. As a team, the Spartans posted a 48.250 in the event.
On beam, MSU scored a 48.950, while Ohio State won the event with a 49.000. Miles recorded a 9.850, and Iakounina posted a 9.775. State did not count a score below 9.825 on floor, as Hill and Alexander led the Spartans with 9.900s, Jenna Rivers and Nicole Anderson each posted 9.850s, and Yarbrough scored 9.825.
The Spartans close out the regular season next Saturday, March, 20, as they travel to Minneapolis for the Big Ten Conference championship.
