Michigan State Softball Tops Western Michigan, 5-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Dayna Feenstra was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBI and Jessica Beech scattered five hits throughout 7.0 innings of work as Michigan State softball defeated Western Michigan, 5-1, at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich., Thursday. Michigan State is now 29-22 on the season, while WMU falls to 26-24.
Three Spartans - Nicole Mercado, Elizabeth Peterson and Angel Merren - were 2-for-3 on the day, and Mercado and Merren added an RBI each. The Spartans posted 13 hits in the game. Natalie Furrow and Peterson each added a double.
State put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as Peterson hit a leadoff double, and scored as Feenstra singled on the next play. Brittney Green's single moved pinch runner Amy Szawara to second base, and both runners moved up on Janette Hurtado's sacrifice. Merren's single drove in Szawara, and Mercado's single to center drove in Green.
The Spartans added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Furrow led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on Peterson's single. Feenstra doubled and scored Furrow. WMU made a pitching change, and two plays later, Erin Harvey singled to left field, though the Spartans couldn't get another run out of the inning. The score remained 5-0 until the top of the sixth, when the Broncos scored one run on a hit and two errors by MSU.
Beech garnered her 23rd win of the season, as she's now 23-13. She allowed one unearned run on five hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. Laura Stuart (19-12) took the loss for WMU. She gave up five runs on 10 hits and a base on balls. She struck out one Spartan batter. Jaymie Voss threw 2.0 innings in relief for Western Michigan, and gave up three hits and struck out three.
State concludes the Big Ten regular season Saturday-Sunday, May 8-9 with a home series against Northwestern. Both games begin at 1 p.m. at Old College Field on the Michigan State campus. Tuesday, May 11, State ends its 2004 regular season with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Detroit.
