EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State pitcher Bryan Gale has signed a professional baseball contract with the Toronto Blue Jays' organization, and will report to the Blue Jays' Rookie League team, the Pulaski Blue Jays of the Appalachian League, in Pulaski, Va.
Gale was signed by Toronto after an impressive performance with the River City (Mo.) Rascals of the independent Frontier League this summer. Gale posted a 4-2 record and a 3.62 earned run average with River City. In seven games including five starts, Gale threw 32.1 innings, allowing only 24 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 28. Opponents hit just .205 against Gale.
During his career at Michigan State, Gale tied the MSU record with 28 career victories, and set new school career marks for strikeouts (277) and innings pitched (351.2). He had a career record of 28-16 with a career ERA of 3.76 and was a three-time second team All-Big Ten selection (2001, 2003, 2004).
Gale is the fourth member of the 2004 Spartan baseball team to be drafted or sign a contract with a major league team. Travis Gulick (Arizona) and Erik Morris (Philadelphia) were both selected in the amateur draft, and Scott Koerber signed with the Chicago Cubs shortly after the draft.
