PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Michigan State (5-0) field hockey, still undefeated, posted its fifth consecutive win of the season in a 4-0 shutout victory over Rutgers (3-2) on Thursday. Senior Forward Veerle Goudswaard notched a hat trick, bringing her scoring total to 10 goals in five games this season. The Green and White victory marks Spartan goaltender Christina Kirkaldy's 13th shutout of her career and second this season.
"We played really well," said head coach Michele Madison of her team. "Rutgers was a feisty, fast team. They tried to drag the ball downfield and capitalize on scoring opportunities, but our defense held its composure and kept its structure."
Spartan defense was so in synch Thursday night that Rutgers was unable to fire off any shots, let alone score a goal. Michigan State posted a total of 20 shots throughout the game, including 15 shots on goal.
"We were able to keep them outside of the 25, which was really an accomplishment," said Madison. "It is a real credit to our defense to see numbers like that."
MSU's offensive efforts were impressive as well. Junior forward Michelle Huynh-Ba put the Spartans on the board with a goal assisted by sophomore forward Ashley Pernicano. After that, Goudswaard took over, recording a real hat trick with three consecutive goals, the first two of which were unassisted and the third coming from a penalty corner opportunity.
"It was a really good game," said Madison. "Now we are just ready to move on to the next one."
State looks ahead to a Saturday, Sept. 11 matchup against Hofstra, set for 11:30 a.m. After that, MSU will remain in New York to face Sacred Heart on Sept. 12. The 11:30 a.m. contest will take place at Hofstra as well.
MSU returns to its home field on Sept. 17 to host Kent State at 3 p.m.
