MSU Game Notes
Attendance: 74,962 - Tonight's game marks the 35th consecutive sellout at Spartan Stadium and the 43rd in the last 47 games.
Michigan State wore green jerseys with green pants for tonight's game. It marked the first time that MSU wore all green since a 1994 home game vs. Ohio State (OSU 23, MSU 7).
Notre Dame now holds a 43-24-1 lead in the all-time series, although MSU has won six of the last eight meetings. However, Notre Dame has won each of the last two games played in Spartan Stadium.
The 31 points scored by Notre Dame are the most in the series since the Fighting Irish scored 36 points in a 36-14 win in South Bend in 1993.
Michigan State is now 17-6 in games played against non-conference opponents since 1999.
Jaren Hayes had his first career sack on Notre Dame's first offensive series, throwing Brady Quinn for a seven-yard loss.
Jerramy Scott recovered a punt blocked by Marshall Campbell in the endzone for MSU's first touchdown. It was MSU's first blocked punt returned for a touchdown since Richard Newsome returned a blocked punt (by Sean Banks) 25 yards for a score vs. Notre Dame in 1998 - the only other night game at Spartan Stadium between these two teams.
Michigan State is now 7-3 during the John L. Smith era when the Spartans score first.
Notre Dame's touchdown with 4:42 left in the opening quarter were the first points allowed by Michigan State in the first quarter this season, and the first points scored by Notre Dame in the first quarter this season.
Tyrell Dortch had his second career interception with 11:41 remaining in the second quarter. Dortch's previous interception was in 2001 at Wisconsin.
DeAndra Cobb's 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the fourth kickoff return for a touchdown of his career. The NCAA record is six by USC's Anthony Davis (1972-74), while he is now alone in second in the Big Ten record books, trailing only Stan Brown of Purdue (5 - 1968-70).
Dave Rayner's 46-yard field goal to open the fourth period was the 42nd field goal of his career. Rayner ranks sixth on MSU's career field-goal chart, needing just two more to catch Hans Nielson (1974-77) for fifth.
Jehuu Caulcrick led Michigan State in rushing with a career-high 85 yards on 15 carries. Caulcrick had 67 yards rushing last week vs. Central Michigan.
Michigan State had six turnovers in the game (three interceptions, three fumbles).
