EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior tri-captain Sarah Alexander was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 12, the conference announced. Alexander, who shares the accolade with Minnesota's Carolyn Yernberg, earned recognition for her impressive season-opening performance in East Lansing on Friday, Jan. 7.
Alexander, a native of Kernersville, N.C., claimed the Spartan Invitational title in the all-around competition after registering a 39.150 last weekend. Still healing from shoulder surgery, Alexander finished second on the balance beam (9.875) and posted a third-place showing on the floor exercise (9.825) to secure Michigan State a first-place finish in the team competition.
Alexander earns the first weekly accolade of her career, while also becoming the first Spartan gymnast honored since Julie Devaty won on Feb. 5, 2003.
Alexander and the rest of the No. 6-ranked Spartans return to action this weekend, as MSU travels to Arizona for a Friday evening quad-meet.
