EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head coach Ted Mahan has announced the release of the 2005 season schedule for the Spartans. MSU takes on three teams that advanced to postseason play in 2004. The schedule is highlighted by a three-game series against 2004 NCAA participant and SEC power Florida in Gainesville on March 11-13. In addition, Indiana Tech made the NAIA super-regional finals and North Florida advanced to the NCAA Division II regional tournament.
"I like the wide range of conferences on our schedule this season, which can provide a good challenge for us," said Mahan.
The Spartans return 14 letterwinners from last season's 33-26 squad that finished tied for third in the Big Ten, including senior Erik Morris (Orchard Park, Mich.) and juniors Alan Cattrysse (Chatham, Ontario) and Oliver Wolcott (Plymouth, Mich.).
In addition to the returning players, freshmen Steve Gerstenberger (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) and Tony Clausen (Jenison, Mich.), and junior transfer Chris Malec (Lindenhurst, Ill.) will be among 17 newcomers that will be counted on to make an instant contribution on the field for State this season.
"The biggest challenge that we'll face this season will be playing 35 games on the road," said Mahan. "That's a concern playing that amount of road games with a young squad."
MSU begins the season on Feb. 25 with a three-game series at Centenary in Shreveport, La. After the Centenary series, the Spartans will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the annual Kennel Club Classic, hosted by North Florida March 3-10. The Green and White travels to Peoria, Ill., for a weekend series at Bradley March 19-20, before opening the home portion of its schedule against Indiana Tech March 24.
The Spartans open their Big Ten schedule on the road April 1-3 with a series at Iowa before hosting Illinois at Kobs Field April 8-10. MSU hosts Purdue (April 22-24) and Penn State (May 13-15) in Big Ten play, while taking on Ohio State (April 15-17), Indiana (May 7-9) and Northwestern (May 20-22) on the road. The Spartans will battle Michigan in a home-and-home series with two games at Oldsmobile Park on April 29 and May 1.
Other teams scheduled to play MSU at Olds Park this season are Eastern Michigan (April 27) and Western Michigan (May 11).
