The Michigan State women's track and field team opens the 2005 indoor season when the Spartans compete Saturday (Jan. 15) at Central Michigan in an open, non-scoring meet vs. the host Chippewas and Notre Dame. Field event competition begins at 12:30 a.m. with running events slated to start at 1:30 p.m.
Michigan State will not be sending a full squad, as the Spartan distance runners will not compete in the meet. Several MSU athletes will be taking place in field events and sprints, however.
New Additions
Michigan State not only has a roster with several new faces, but the coaching staff has a pair of new additions as well. Qingyi Zheng, who has more than 30 years of coaching experience in both China and the U.S., will coach MSU's throwers, vertical jumpers and multi-event competitors, and will administer the strength and conditioning program. Rita Arndt-Molis has also joined the staff to coach the distance runners, and serves as MSU's head cross country coach as well.
Quoting the Coach:
Here are quotes from MSU head coach Angela Goodman previewing the indoor season opener: "For those that are competing, they've been training for a whole semester and are anxious to go. This meet will put us in a good position to shake off the cobwebs from Christmas break and get them ready to compete. Before they left, they were in great shape. We're hoping to build on what we've done and the progress that we're making. This meet will get everyone's competitive juices flowing and give the new kids a chance to experience competition, and the returning people will get an opportunity to see what progress they've made."
