Senior wide receiver Kyle Brown has spent his career Michigan State making an impact. On the field he's caught six touchdown passes and made 87 receptions in four years. On top of that, he's also played special teams, including returning punts. Off the field he's made an even bigger impact. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native has always been active in the bettering of the community and helping others.
The propensity for contributing to society is something that was instilled in Brown early on in his life.
"That's the way I was brought up," Brown explained. "My dad always told me to give to the people that are less fortunate. My grandfather taught me that if you give more you'll receive more blessings."
Groups and projects that Brown has been involved in include: the Multicultural program, Teams & Toys, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Dodgeball for Hurricane Relief, Cancer Kids Trick or Treat, and St. Vincent's Hospital Black History Month.
Angela Howard is the head of the MSU Outreach Program, which helps get student-athletes involved in community service. According to Howard, Brown has done an outstanding job in his work with the area.
"Kyle is the kind of person you can depend on, and with Outreach you need that," Howard said. "Not only will he participate in something, but he'll get others involved and he'll coordinate the event."
Helping came natural for Brown. "When Angela Howard first came to me and asked me if I was interested in talking I didn't hesitate," he said. "I know if I was a kid I would like an athlete to come and see me."
Working with the Multicultural Program has been an especially rewarding experience for Brown. He believes that his work there is beneficial to the Spartan football program as well as the community.
"The more diverse we are the more recruits we'll get," Brown explained. This past summer Brown participated in an internship with the King-Chavez-Parks Initiative, where he got to spend time with young children. For him it was a very informative experience.
"It let me see how kids in the inner-city interacted," Brown commented. "It really opened my eyes."
Brown has also excelled in the classroom during his time in East Lansing. An interdisciplinary studies in social science major with emphasis on human resources and society, he has been an Academic All-Big Ten selection two years running.
Brown's work on the football field has been equally impressive, as he has been part of one of the nation's most productive offenses and most dangerous receiving corps. The senior is one of five Spartans to make at least 25 receptions this year.
"We've brought a lot of excitement, and we've kept the fans excited," Brown said. "We've been a really close group and it's kind of sad for me to leave because those are my guys: Terry Love, Jerramy Scott, Kerry Reed, Carl Grimes, and Matt Trannon."
The receivers and the rest of his teammates will always hold a special place in Brown's heart. It's that kind of family feeling that led him to Michigan State in the first place.
"That's the thing that brought me to MSU, the family environment," Brown said. "You're going to remember the games, running out the tunnel, all of that. But joking around on the field and in the weight room, all through winter, summer, and fall conditioning, that's what I'll remember."
Kyle Brown's legacy at Michigan State will be one of greatness in almost every area. He has been an exciting player on the field, an outstanding student, and an exceptional member of the community. One can only imagine that he'll create a similar legacy wherever he ends up next.
