SERIES NOTES
Purdue narrowed the series gap with the 28-21 victory...MSU now leads the all-time series, 28-27-3...the Spartans fall to 11-16-3 in West Lafayette.
STANTON WATCH
Junior quarterback Drew Stanton threw for 248 yards on 22-of-30 passing...he established a school record by throwing a touchdown pass in his 10th consecutive game...it breaks the previous mark of nine set by Jeff Smoker in 2001.
Stanton also threw for over 200 yards for the 10th consecutive game, adding to his school record he set last week (previous: Jeff Smoker, eight games, 2003).
Stanton began the game 7-for-7 with 111 yards and a touchdown...he rushed for a 1-yard score in the first quarter, his fourth rushing TD of the season and 10th of his career.
Stanton now has 19 touchdown passes this season, tying him with Bill Burke for fifth most in a Spartan season.
In the MSU career records section, Stanton climbed to seventh all-time with 4,172 passing yards...he tied Todd Schultz for fifth place with 27 touchdown passes
MORE OFFENSIVE NOTES
The Spartans opened the game with an efficient five-play scoring drive in just 1:37, capped by a 16-yard reception by Jason Teague for a touchdown...it marks Teague's first receiving touchdown of the season and third of his career...the Spartans have scored on their first possession in four games (Kent State, Hawaii, Northwestern, Purdue) this season.
The Boilermakers limited the Spartan offense to 351 yards of total offense, the lowest output of the season for MSU...the previous low was 455 yards vs. Michigan.
SPECIAL TEAMS...
Terry Love returned a punt 49 yards in the first quarter, a season long for the Spartans this season.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
SirDarean Adams recorded his second sack of the season at the end of the first half and also forced a fumble - his second of the year - on the same play...David Herron Jr. then recovered the fumble, his second recovery of the season, at the MSU 16, and returned it 19 yards...Herron then fumbled the ball, and it was picked up by Eric Smith, who ran 65 yards for the score...it marked MSU's third defensive TD of the year (Adams interception at Notre Dame; Peko fumble recovery vs. Michigan)...it was Smith's first touchdown of his career.
Eric Smith collected six tackles in the game, which gives him 304 for his career...Smith becomes only the 15th player in Spartan history to record at least 300 tackles...Smith also returned a punt for 21 yards in the second quarter.
Clifton Ryan recorded his third sack of the season.
