Michigan State vs. Ohio State
Post-Game Quotes
Feb. 20, 2005
Ohio State head coach Jim Foster
On Ohio State's guard play...
"I think our guards, defensively, were watching a little too much and not playing as aggressively as they could have and should have. They (Michigan State) took advantage of that."
On the final shot of the game...
"I thought we got a great shot at the end of the game. Brandie has great instincts on the floor. She took it down and got a great look at the basket. I couldn't have asked for better."
On the play of both team's top players...
"I think Haynie was very aggressive in driving to the right all night, and getting to the basket. Davenport had to rotate to that side and got the blocks, but I think her aggressiveness was very beneficial to them. Jessica had one of those games tonight where I thought we should have gotten the ball in her hands more, but a player like her doesn't always get one-on-one coverage."
On the turnovers...
"I thought we were tentative tonight, and that tenativness caused us to turn the ball over a bunch. If we were tennis players we would be hitting the ball into the net a bunch, just unforced errors."
On the atmosphere...
"It is great for women's basketball. If you aren't excited to see all those fans and get to play in this atmosphere, you are a little jaded."
Michigan State head coach Joanne P. McCallie
Overall thoughts on the game...
"That was an excellent basketball game, and a great, great environment. We're just so proud to have that kind of environment in Breslin. To be quite honest with you, I thought what these kids did to get to a situation to have this game was incredible, and I don't think enough was said about it. I think this is a courageous bunch. Great game. We'll enjoy this for twenty-four hours."
On the seniors...
"I'm just very proud of the seniors, Kristin Haynie and Kelli Roehrig. I can still remember being in their living rooms, talking to them about coming to Michigan State, how they were then, and how they are now, and all that they've accomplished."
On her thoughts when Kristin Haynie stepped to the line with five seconds left...
"I was really focused on what we were going to do next. I was trying to figure out how we were going to stop them and what we were going to do. She loves that. She's a competitor."
On the flow of the game...
"The ebbs and flows in that game were incredible. We did some silly things in that game, and we came back around. It was just amazing, the ebb and flow of that game overall, and how valuable that game will be for learning and getting better in the future. I really thought it was a great experience for the younger players to get a feel for what it's like."
On the play of Davenport...
"Tremendous. Twelve blocks? I don't think I have ever heard of that."
Sr. Kelli Roehrig
On playing against Davenport...
"Tough player to play against. She could play. You back down to a player like that, she scores thirty-five points, like their game before (MSU). That's a player where you just have to keep going. I was not going to give up. I had to make every shot tough for her."
On the win...
"We were really feeling it. We definitely deserved this because everything that we've done is just really great. It just all came together today."
Sr. Kristin Haynie
On playing each team the same...
"Coming into the Michigan game on Wednesday, it's the last Big Ten game of the year. We have to play for a championship too - we have to play every game the same. We're going to enjoy this win today, come back and watch film, and get ready for Michigan.
On going to the line with five seconds left...
"I think Lindsay and I did a pretty good job taking control down the stretch. We didn't get to the free throw line much, but when we did we made it count. I wasn't nervous, I just took the shot like it was any other free throw."
Jr. Lindsay Bowen
On the crowd's impact in the game...
"I think that was our sixth man tonight. Granted, everyone on the team stuck together, played well, but it's always a boost when we can get great fan support."
On shooting free throws...
"You have to maintain your focus in a tight game like that. That's what you practice every day after practice - it's just the same rhythm."
