MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Junior Ian Clutten (Cape Town, South Africa) finished third in the 200 breaststroke (53.77) as Michigan State concluded competition at the 2005 Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center. The Spartans scored 184 points to finish ninth, 80 points ahead of 10th-place Iowa. Minnesota captured the team title with 720 points, defeating second-place Indiana by three points.
"We ran out of gas on the final day, but I'm happy with our overall performance in the meet," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I'm very happy that our five seniors didn't conclude their careers with a last-place finish, and hopefully, we can use this as a building block for the future of the program."
Freshman Adam Schmitt (Grand Haven, Mich.) finished 14th in the 100 freestyle (1:38.32), while junior Johan Sunryd (Molndal, Sweden) placed 14th in the 200 backstroke (1:48.67).
The team of Schmitt, senior Patrick Saucedo (Jackson, Mich.), junior Matt Wisniewski (Plymouth, Mich.) and sophomore Jason Vadney (Taylor Mill, Ky.) finished seventh in the 400 free relay with a NCAA `B' provisional time of 2:58.09.
