GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Stephen Locke threw six shutout innings to lead No. 6 Florida to a 10-0 victory over Michigan State Sunday, March 13 as the Gators completed a three-game sweep.
Florida (15-4) got on the board in the first inning after junior Justin Tordi drew a bases loaded walk from MSU starter Chris Malec (Lindenhurst, Ill.), scoring junior Stephen Barton who reached base on a throwing error to open the inning.
The Gators broke the game open with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by junior Daniel Brooks and a solo shot by sophomore Gavin Dickey.
Dickey led Florida's 12-hit barrage, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and a RBI.
Locke (3-0) earned the win for Florida after giving up only six hits in six scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts. Three Florida relievers held the Spartans hitless over the final three innings to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore right fielder Adam Tripp (Saugus, Calif.) led Michigan State, going 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Malec (1-1) took the loss for Michigan State, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits in two and two-third innings. Malec also tallied three strikeouts.
The Spartans (5-6) travel to Peoria, Ill., to open a three-game series at Bradley, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
