EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf heads to the 2005 Lady Buckeye Invitational this weekend (April 16-17) hosted at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. The 15-team tournament tees-off with a shotgun start set for 8:30 a.m. each day. The event will consist of 54 total holes of action, with 36 played on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. The Lady Buckeye Invitational marks the Spartans' final regular-season event of the year, before heading to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle at the 2005 Big Ten Championships (April 22-24).
Teams scheduled to compete at this season's Lady Buckeye include: Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Marshall, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ohio, Penn State, Purdue, Toledo and Western Michigan.
Coming off of her best outing of the season where she tied for 14th at the Liz Murphey Invitational, sophomore Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) will look to continue her success at the Lady Buckeye. Meikle paced the way for the Green and White at their most recent outing, the Liz Murphey Invitational, helping the team to an eighth place finish.
Also looking to make an impact for State will be fellow sophomores Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.). Both players best showings of the year came at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 11-12), where McConnell finished in a tie for tenth and Rose finished in a tie for 22nd, respectively.
Rounding out the roster for the Spartans are junior Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) and freshman Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.). As the veteran leader of the team with the most tournament appearances under her belt at 30 events in three seasons and counting, Burleigh hopes to lead the Spartans to their first tournament title of the season. Her best showing of the year came at MSU's home event, the Mary Fossum Invitational, where she tied for 16th.
Brown has become an impact played in her own regard in her first season of collegiate golf. As the lone freshman to appear in each of State's eight-previous tournaments, her best outing came at the Lady Paladin Invitational (Oct. 22-24), where she finished tied for ninth place overall.
Redshirt freshman Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.) is the final Spartan making the trip to Columbus. Polanski has appeared in five events for the Green and White, most recently at the Northrup Invitational (Feb. 7-9). Her best showing of the season came at the Mary Fossum Invitational; where she tied for sixth place overall.
