Women's Track And Field Excels At Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - During a busy day Friday at the Drake Relays, four Spartans posted top-ten finishes in individual events, led by a pair of field event specialists.
Mickie Rzepka tied for third in the pole vault to lead MSU's performers, clearing 12-5 1/2, which was just two-and-a-half inches shy of her school record. In the javelin, Melinda Buckmaster finished seventh with a toss of 151-3, which was just one inch short of her personal best and the third best throw in MSU history, set earlier this season at the MSU Invitational.
MSU's other top-ten finishes came on the track. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Michelle Carson finished eighth with a time of 10:41.42, while Megan Radermacher also finished eighth, completing the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.97.
Also competing for MSU individual were Jackie Walton, who finished 15th in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles in 14.36, Taren James, who placed 16th in the triple jump with a leap of 39-1 1/4, and Paris Mandy, who was 33rd in the prelims of the 100-meter dash in 12.32.
Michigan State had three relays teams compete on Friday as well. MSU's distance medley relay team of Sarah Stornant, Marquita Allen, Aimee Keenan and Brittany Ballard finished 17th (12:01.44) and the 4x100 squad of Mandy, Walton, Cynetheia Rooks and Allen placed 20th (47.11). Mandy, Rooks, Walton and Allen also teamed for the 4x400-meter relay, finishing 24th with a time of 3:51.53.
Action at the Drake Relays will conclude on Saturday.
