
Women's Golf Finishes 17th At NCAA Championships

SUNRIVER, Ore. - Michigan State women's golf finished 17th out of 24 teams at the 2005 NCAA Championships on Friday, May 20. The Spartans shot a 302 on day four and closed the 72-hole tournament with a 1,206 (304-301-299-302). For a second straight day, the weather when MSU teed off was cloudy and cool at the par-71, 6,312-yard Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
Duke captured the 2005 NCAA Championships, shooting a four-round 1,170. UCLA (1,175) finished second, while Auburn (1,176) placed third. Pepperdine (1,179) and California (1,180) round out the top-five teams in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Freshman Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) paced the Spartans, as they finished tied for 27th with a 297. The 297 ties the duo for seventh on MSU's low 72-hole tournament list.
Brown shot a 75 in Friday's final round and concluded the tournament with rounds of 71-77-74-75. Meanwhile, McConnell recorded a 78 in the final round and concluded play with rounds of 76-73-70-78 for her 297.
Duke's Anna Grzebien took medalist honors after shooting a 286 (73-75-65-73), while Virginia's Leah Wigger was the runner-up, just one stroke behind Grzebien with a 287.
After posting three-straight rounds with a 77, junior Dayna Burleigh (Horsham, Pa.) continued her steady play as she shot a 76 on the final day of play and finished the championships in 85th place. She closed the tournament with a 307 (77-77-77-76) which ties her for 20th on MSU's low 72-hole tournament chart.
Sophomores Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) round out the Spartan line-up as the duo tied for 98th and 107th, respectively. Rose posted a 77 Friday and finished the tournament with a 310 (80-74-79-77). Meanwhile, Meikle shot the best score of the day as she recorded a 74 in the final round of play. She finished the tournament with a 312 (80-80-78-74).
The 2004-05 season marked State's fifth trip in the last six years to the NCAA Championships.
