McConnell And Garety Reach Semifinals Of Michigan Amateur

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and former Spartan Joan Garety (1975-78) both advanced to the semifinals of the 89th annual Michigan Amateur Championship on Thursday, July 14. This year's championship is being played at Radrick Farms in Ann Arbor, Mich.
McConnell, who earned the No. 2 seed for the tournament, defeated Melissa Sneller, 3&2, in the round of 16 and beat Heidi Aittama, 5&4, in the round of 8 on Thursday. She will meet Rosemary Cassard in the semifinals on Friday morning.
Garety beat top-seed Caitlan Roschek 1-up on Thursday morning and recorded a 3&2 decision over Donna Benford in the round of 8. Garety will meet Laura Bavaird in the other semifinal on Friday morning.
The winners of the two semifinal matches will meet Friday afternoon for the championship.
Head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll beat Shasta Averyhardt, 5&3, in the round of 16 before falling to Bavaird 1-up in the round of eight.
Meanwhile, junior Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio) dropped a 1-up decision to Korea's Eun Jung Lee in the second round of match play at the 29th annual U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship on Thursday, July 14. This year's event is being played at Swope Memorial Golf Club in Kansas City.
