EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey won its third game in four days on its California road trip with a 3-0 win over Stanford on Monday morning. State defeated California and Pacific earlier in the week.
Sophomore Charlotte van der Laag scored her first goal of the season at 17:45 on senior Breanna Harpstead's pass, putting the Spartans on top 1-0. Sophomore Becky Manning pushed the Spartan lead to 2-0 going in to the half, with a goal at 26:52; senior Jessica Miller was credited with the assist. Harpstead closed out the 3-0 romp over the Cardinals, with an unassisted goal of her own at 38:53. Senior goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy stopped six shots on the day.
"Jessica Miller and Christina Kirkaldy really kept us focused out here; it's hard playing that many games in that short of a time," remarked head coach Michele Madison. "This was the first time Michigan State has won all three games in California. It's great for this young team and today, we were able to get everyone some time."
Michigan State returns to East Lansing and will open at home with James Madison on Friday, Sept. 9 and St. Louis on Sept. 10.
