EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey was downed by visiting Iowa in the second overtime period, 2-1, on Saturday. Geraldine Raynor tallied her second goal of the season to knot the game, 1-1, late in the second period, but Caitlin McCurdy posted two goals to earn the win for the Hawkeyes.
At the end of the first half the game was scoreless, with the Hawkeyes holding a 5-2 advantage on shots. MSU (4-10, 0-4 Big Ten) had two chances on penalty corners compared to the one opportunity by Iowa (7-7, 2-3 Big Ten), but neither team could capitalize.
The Hawkeyes got on the board early in the second period, with McCurdy scoring from the top of the circle at 39:27. The Hawkeyes held the lead until Charlotte van der Laag got the ball in to Amy Schneider on a penalty corner, allowing Raynor to tie the game up for the Spartans at 56:59. The scored was even, 1-1, at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Iowa outshot the Spartans 6-4 in the first overtime period, although MSU held a 6-1 advantage on penalty corners. The score remained 1-1 at the end of the first overtime to send the game into the second overtime period.
McCurdy ended that game at 84:04 for the Hawkeyes off an assist by Lauren Pfeiffer to allow Iowa to come away with a 2-1 victory.
"We continued to step up our play, bit-by-bit," said MSU head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We finally got our corner back as well, but we have to be smarter with our chances. We didn't win today, so we have to keep on working and believing that what we do is the right thing to do in order to get the win we want."
The Hawkeyes had 18 shots compared to MSU's seven. Stephanie Yuhasz had 11 saves for the Spartans.
Michigan State will have its final non-conference matchup on Tuesday at Central Michigan beginning at 4 p.m.
