EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Sara Brown was named Golfweek.com's Player of the Week. The Tuscon, Ariz., native earns the honor after winning her first collegiate tournament at the Landfall Tradition on Oct. 29. She is currently ranked No. 25 on the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index.
The only player to score under par, Brown shot rounds of 74-69-72 for a 1-under 215 to win the competition by four stokes. Her score tied the third-best 54-hole score in school history and her second-round 69 was a career best. It was also the first time an MSU women's golfer had claimed medalist honors since Allison Fouch won back-to-back tournaments in 2003.
"It was such a great feeling," Brown commented of her win. "I have been working so hard and winning tournaments are always one of my goals heading into competition. I have been close before, but it's nice for it to finally happen."
Brown, who has rattled off 15 consecutive top-25 finishes, a streak that dates back to the 2005 Mary Fossum Invitational, leads the Spartans with a team-best 74.00 stroke average. Already setting the season-best average in Michigan State history, with a 74.18 in 2005-06, she is also looking to break the career-average mark. Brown entered the 2006-07 season ranked second in the category with a 75.80, behind Emily Bastel's 75.75.
"Sara is on her way to being one of the greatest players Michigan State has ever had," head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "It is especially exciting because she is only a junior. She is a wonderful team player, a great leader and an amazing person to have as a Spartan."
