MUNCIE, Ind. - The Spartan gymnastics squad continued non-conference action Friday night competing at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. With a 191.025, and first place finishes in all four events, Michigan State captured first place, while host BSU (187.875) and Bowling Green (183.625) finished second and third respectively. The win improves State's record to 8-4-0 in 2006.
Leading the way for MSU was Victoria Iakounina who took first place in the all-around competition with a 38.425, while teammate Katlyn Roggensack finished third with a 37.850. Iakounina scored a meet, and season-best, with a 9.825 on the uneven bars, as the Green and White would take the top five scores on the event.
Chayla Hill tumbled to a first place finish on the vault with a 9.775, followed by Iakounina with a 9.750 while Bethany Little, with a 9.700, took third place honors. Briana Dicus would continue State's domination, posting a 9.775 mark on the balance beam while Hill finished in third place with a 9.500. Dicus scored a career-best 9.725 to capture the floor exercise crown, while Iakounina's 9.700 was good enough for a third place finish for the event.
"Its nice to leave the Classic with two wins, however we as a coaching staff will continue to stress competing with the intensity we show during our practice routines," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said. "We look forward to returning home this weekend and competing in front of our home crowd."
State returns home to Jenison Field House Saturday, Feb. 18 when it hosts New Hampshire in an 8 p.m. match-up.
