EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball program will hold a First Pitch Dinner on Wednesday, March 22 at the LaSalle Bank Club in Spartan Stadium, beginning with a silent auction at 6:00 p.m. The Spartans are pleased to announce that former MSU baseball and basketball standout and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Robin Roberts will be on hand as the keynote speaker for the first-annual event.
"In its first year, the First Pitch Dinner will be a great way to kick off our 2006 home baseball season," Spartan head coach David Grewe said. "It is great opportunity for both fans of MSU and all baseball fans in the state of Michigan to meet our 2006 team and receive season tickets to Spartan home games this season. The First Pitch Card (season ticket) will start a tradition that will help create a unified and solid fan base."
Kicking off the night will be a silent auction of MSU collectables and memorabilia, followed by the First Pitch Dinner. All attendees will receive 2006 season tickets (First Pitch Card) and media guide, as well as the opportunity to win one of several door prizes. Coach Grewe will introduce the 2006 Spartan baseball and team and keynote speaker Robin Roberts also will take the stage, highlighting the night's festivities.
In two years at MSU (1946-47), Roberts posted a 9-6 record, setting the school's single-season record for shutouts with six in 1948 (record still stands today). Making his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948, Roberts compiled a 286-245 record with 2,357 strikeouts, a 3.41 ERA, 305 complete games, 45 shutouts, and 4,688.2 innings pitched in 676 games over a 19-year career. A seven-year all-star and The Sporting News N.L. Player of the Year in 1952 and 1955, Roberts is the only Spartan to be inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame (1976). Roberts also was among the charter class of inductees into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame (1992) and has had his uniform retired by both Michigan State and the Philadelphia Phillies.
"I am extremely excited to have such a great Spartan in Robin Roberts be our guest and keynote speaker," Grewe stated. "Robin is not only a giant in the annals of MSU but also in the history of the game of baseball."
Seating to this year's event is limited, with students and senior citizens receiving a reduced ticket rate - individual, patron and corporate seating available.
