EAST LANSING, MICH. - Freshman Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.) and sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) sit in a tie for eighth place at 1-over-par after the first two rounds of the 39th Fossum Invitational. As a team, Michigan State is in eighth place at 305-288 - 593 heading into Sunday's final round at the par-72, 7,013-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
"I was proud of the guys. They all fought their way back from a poor start, and we played well in the afternoon," head coach Mark Hankins said. "This tournament has some of the best fan support we see all year, at any tournament. It was great weather today, and the Fossum Invitational is a tournament that's been a part of this community for 39 years."
Indiana leads the 12-team field at 1-under-par 292-283 - 575, two shots shy of the tournament's 36-hole scoring record. The Hoosiers snared the lead behind the strength of its 5-under-par second round of 283, one stroke shy of the tournament's 18-hole scoring record.
First-round leader Illinois sits four shots behind at 3-over-par (284-295 - 579), while Northwestern (297-284 - 581) and Denver (288-295 - 583) round out the top four. Individually, Northwestern's Chris Wilson and Denver's Charlie Soule lead the 66-player field at 6-under-par 138.
For the Spartans, Hutchison shot rounds a 74-71 - 145 total and is looking for his second top-10 finish of the season, and first since his fifth-place performance at the Landfall Tradition. Brehm's 77-68 - 145 puts him in position to claim his fifth collegiate top-10 finish.
Junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) carded rounds of 76-71 - 147 and sits in a tie for 16th at 3-over-par. Harmon's second-round 71 included six birdies, including three in a row on the back nine. Freshman Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and junior Mitch Pierce (Fenton, Mich.) round out the Spartan lineup. Cuzzort recorded consecutive rounds of 78 for a 156 total, while Pierce carded back-to-back rounds of 80 for a 160 total in his second tournament of the year.
In addition to the five-player lineup, MSU also competed four individuals. Sophomore Brandon Cigna (Novi, Mich.) recorded eight birdies on the day and finished with a 6-over-par total of 72-78 - 150, putting him in a tie for 34th. Sophomore Nathan Gunthorpe (Ovid, Mich.) and junior Zac Zedrick (Danville, Ill.) sit in a tie for 38th with 151 totals, while freshman Grant Tungate (East Lansing, Mich.) is in a tie for 41st at 77-75 - 152.
