EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fired a final-round 69 to finish in a tie for seventh at even-par 216 at the 39th Fossum Invitational on Sunday, April 23. The Spartans made a final-round charge, erasing an 18-shot deficit to claim the tournament lead with six holes remaining, but finished in seventh place at 305-288-285 - 878. MSU shot a final-round score of 3-under-par 285, tying its lowest team round of the season.
"Once we got used to the tournament environment, playing at home, we played well," said head coach Mark Hankins. "We have nothing to lose next week, and if this young team continues to learn and can put together a team effort, we'll be okay."
Indiana outlasted the 12-team field to claim the tournament title for the second time in three years at the par-72, 7,013-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers carded a 54-hole total of 292-283-295 - 870, four shots better than 2005 champion Minnesota (301-284-289 - 874). Xavier and Illinois tied for third at 875, while Northwestern and Denver finished tied for fifth at 877.
Individually, Denver's Charlie Soule dominated the 12-team field, setting the 54-hole tournament record at 9-under par 207 (69-71-69). Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie and Northwestern's Chris Wilson finished at 2-under-par 214.
For Michigan State, Harmon used a pair of sub-par rounds to post a 76-71-69 - 216 total, his fourth top-10 finish of the season. Freshman Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.) and sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) posted 13th-place finishes at 218. Hutchison's 74-71-73 - 218 total was one shot shy of his career low, and resulted in his second career top-20 finish. Brehm carded rounds of 77-68-73 - 218 to post his fourth top-20 finish of the season.
Freshman Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and junior Mitch Pierce (Fenton, Mich.) rounded out the Spartan lineup. Cuzzort used an even-par final round to move into 43rd at 78-78-72 - 228, while Pierce fired a season-low round of 71 on Sunday, moving him into 55th at 80-80-71 - 231.
The Spartans also featured four individuals at their home tournament. Junior Zac Zedrick (Danville, Mich.), sophomore Nathan Gunthorpe (Ovid, Mich.), and freshman Grant Tungate (East Lansing, Mich.) finished in a tie for 36th at 227, while sophomore Brandon Cigna (Novi, Mich.) finished in a tie for 46th at 229.
