EAST LANSING, Mich. - Twelve members of the Michigan State baseball team were among those named to the spring Academic All-Big Ten Team, as released by the conference office Thursday, June 1. Bringing back the true meaning of student-athlete has been one of many focal points under the tutelage of head coach David Grewe, as the program had just four members honored in 2005. The 12 recipients in 2006 mark the highest number in Spartan baseball history.
"Part of building a first-class program comparable to the nation's elite starts with a commitment to being great in all aspects of the word student-athlete," Grewe stated. "It is my goal to build a program with players that succeed on and off the field."
All three returning honorees from 2005 repeated on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Juniors Ryan Basham, (general management/Lowell, Ind.), Craig Brookes, (marketing/Naperville, Ill.) and Adam Tripp (finance/Saugus, Calif.) were each honored for the second year in a row.
Also being named as Academic All-Big Ten selections in 2006 were: seniors Jamey Embree (supply chain management/Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Chris Malec (general management/Lindenhurst, Ill.), junior John Dwan (advertising, Libertyville, Ill.) and sophomores Chris Cullen (general management/Tecumseh, Mich.), Spencer Hahn (supply chain management/Findlay, Ohio), Mike Monterey (physiology/Farmington Hills, Mich.), Nolan Moody (business/East Lansing, Mich.), Bobby Walmsley (accounting/ Harrison Township, Mich.) and Peter Wolff (human resource management, Lake Bluff, Ill.).
"Our success in the classroom this past year has been tremendous, and I am very proud of my players that have held a high level of accountability in the classroom," Grewe added. "This is a great start to our building process, and now the bar is set for our future teams."
A total of 948 spring and at-large sports student-athletes were honored by the Big Ten, with 83 of those from Michigan State. The baseball program had the highest number of student-athletes of any MSU men's spring program. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
