Three Current Spartans Move On In National Tournaments

EAST LANSING, Mich - Members of the Michigan State women's golf team continued their solid play in national events on Wednesday. Junior Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) advanced to the round of 64 in the 30th United States Women's Amateur Public Links while seniors Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) won their opening round match at the 106th Women's Western National Amateur Championship.
Brown shot a two-round total of 150 (74-76) on Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo., to advance to match play. Brown will go up against Christi Athas in her first match. The other Spartan competing in the Publinks was red-shirt freshman Carly Hunt (Easton, Pa.). Hunt did not qualify for match play after shooting 161 (80-81).
McConnell defeated Emily Brand 7 & 6 in her first round match at the Western Am on Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, Va. Meikle advanced to the second round by beating Hallie Cochran 4 & 3. Spartan junior Kristen Polanski (Livonia, Mich.) lost her match to Morgan Olds 3 & 2. Another competitor with Spartan ties was Dayna Burleigh, who recently completed her senior season at MSU. Burleigh won her match with Julie Carmichael 5 & 4.
