EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan men's golf team travels to Birmingham, Ala., for the second annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 25-26, hosted by UAB at the Shoal Creek Country Club. The par-72, 7,114-yard Jack Nicklaus designed course is ranked No. 49 on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public and Private Golf Courses in America, and has played host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship and 1986 U.S. Amateur. LSU won last year's inaugural event with a team score of 863, and returns to defend its title against a 15-team field that features 12 teams that finished last season ranked in Golfweek's top 60.
"We have been improving each tournament and had a pretty good outing last week at the Gopher Invitational," MSU head coach Mark Hankins said. "We look to carry that momentum into this week."
Senior Matt Harmon, junior Ryan Brehm, and freshman Jack Newman will each make their third start of the season this week. Harmon finished fourth last week at the Gopher Invitational, posting his 10th top-five finish of his career, and was recently named as one of Golf Digest's 50 players to watch. Brehm has started the season with back-to-back top-10 finishes, while Newman carded his first-career sub-par round at the Gopher Invitational, en route to a 23rd-place finish.
The final two spots in the Spartan lineup will be decided in a playoff between the remaining three members of the traveling party, sophomores Steve Cuzzort, Grant Tungate and Randy Hutchison.
The 54-hole event begins with 36 holes on Monday at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start, while Tuesday's final round will be a split-tee start beginning at 8:15 a.m.
