Spartan Track And Field Concludes Competition At Red Simmons Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State track and field teams finished competition at the Red Simmons Invitational on Saturday where several Spartans posted first-place finishes in their respective events.
On the men's side, pole vaulter Mark Langlois turned in a first-place performance of 5.05m, while fellow field events participant Jason Brown captured first place in the shot put with a mark of 17.19m. After a record-setting performance at the Chippewa Open on Jan. 12, sprinter Jeremy Orr turned in a third-place performance in the 60m dash with a mark of 6.84 for the Green and White.
Hurdler John Childress finished second in the 200m dash (22.39) and took first-place in the 60m hurdle event with a time of 8.01.
"For the second week in a row we were able to see our team make great progress and continue to compete," Spartan director of cross country and track and field Walt Drenth said. "We are beginning to see those team members that we feel will score at the conference meet make improvements in their respective events."
For the Spartan women, Erica Bailey and Meagan Halliwill swept the top two spots in the weight throw event, posting throws of 17.10m and 16.71m, respectively. Bailey added a second-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.27m for the Green and White. Mid-distance runner Katie Kelly took first-place honors in the 3000m with a time of 9:56.30, while Michelle Rafferty was the top Spartan finisher in the mile run with a season-best time of 4:56.89. Lisa Senakiewich also posted a strong time for MSU in the mid-distance events, finishing second in the 800m with a time of 2:13.78.
In Friday's women's pentathalon event, MSU's Anna Coster finished second with 3605 points, just 95 points shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
