EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Heather Rose (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) earned her first career Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week honors after posting a Big Ten-best 20th-place finish at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, the conference office released late Thursday evening.
Rose finished the Northrop Grumman in a tie for 20th with a 54-hole score of 226 after the senior posted a Michigan State-best round of 2-over-par 73 in her final round at the tournament. The Chillicothe, Ohio, native, posted six birdies during the three-day event, while double-bogeying just two holes. Golfweek/Sagarin's 97th-ranked golfer dropped her season average to 75.8 strokes per round and finished in the top 20 at a tournament for the fourth time this season.
This is the first weekly honor in Rose's career. She has started at 38 events in her four years in the Green and White, finishing in the top five twice, including a fifth-place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational on Sept. 16-17 and a fourth-place finish at the Wolverine Invitational on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Senior Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) was the last Spartan to win the weekly award, on April 5, 2006.
The Spartans will next host the Central District Invitational at River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla., with the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament set to start on Monday.
