PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State freshman Rochelle Robinson has been named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Robinson currently ranks 14th in the nation on the vault with an average of 9.950, and ranks 22nd on the uneven bars with a 9.837 average. The award is the first league honor of her career, and marks the third Spartan Gymnast of the Week honoree this season, as freshman Nicole Curler garnered the honor on Jan. 17, and senior Kristen Coleman earned the award on Jan. 31.
"Rochelle is an exceptional gymnast who has the ability to wow the crowd with her dynamic performances," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said. "We are thrilled she is our third Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honoree in just four weeks of competition."
Robinson picks up her first Gymnast of the Week accolade after capturing three individual titles at the State of Michigan Classic last weekend. The Chesapeake, Va., native claimed top honors on the vault and floor exercise with a pair of 9.925 scores. She also matched teammate Kristen Coleman's first-place finish on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.825. Robinson helped the Spartans claim the State of Michigan Classic team title, their first since the 2003 season.
No. 17 Michigan State continues the 2007 regular season this weekend, traveling to the University of New Hampshire for the Fox Run Invitational. Brown and No. 22 West Virginia will also compete at the event scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday at the Whittemore Center.
