WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Michigan State men's golf team turned in a first round 283 (3-over par) to conclude day one in a tie for ninth place at the NCAA Championships. The Spartans are eight strokes out of first place on the par-70, 6,803-yard course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. Jack Newman and Grant Tungate sit highest on the leaderboard at 29th with day one even par rounds.
"It was a good start for the team," said head coach Mark Hankins. "They all played well at times and made some opportunistic birdies during different stretches on the golf course."
Stanford leads the 30-team field with a 5-under 275, followed by Coastal Carolina (277) and Florida, Minnesota and Texas are tied for third with 278. Michigan State is tied for ninth with UCLA and Florida State. Individually, Stanford's Rob Grube is on top with a 6-under 64 after 18 holes.
Newman posted an even par round, his second of the season, after starting on the No. 10 465-yard hole with a bogey. The freshman evened his score on the No. 11 par-4 hole with a birdie, and strung together two more birdies and 12 more pars to finish the day in 29th place.
Tungate also finished the afternoon with a 70 and in a tie for 29th, marking a new season low for the sophomore. The East Lansing native was on fire on the front nine, carding four birdies on Nos. 3, 7, 8 and 9.
Sophomore Steve Cuzzort also shot the lights out on his final five holes, with four birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 9 and held par on the No. 7 hole to finish the first 18 holes with a 1-over par 71. He is currently in tie for 51st place.
Ryan Brehm had four birdies on the afternoon and is 2-over 72 and in a tie for 66th, while Matt Harmon is in a tie for 89th place with a 3-over 73.
"Tomorrow afternoon will present new golfing conditions and we will have to adapt," Hankins said. "We have our goals set for the entire championship, so we will do our best to stay with that plan."
Action continues tomorrow with the Spartans teeing off at 1:17 p.m.
