WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded their first competition of the 2008 calendar year with solid performances at Purdue, but the Boilermakers claimed a 181-119 victory over the Spartan men, and a 186-112 victory in the women's dual. Senior Adam Schmitt won three events to lead the Spartans, while junior Heather Kiluk and freshman Stephanie Fisher and Marlys Fuqua were the top performers on the women's squad.
Schmitt started his day with a first-place performance in the 200 free, clocking a time of 1:39.38. He would later add wins in the 100 free (44.98) and the 200 IM (1:51.78). Freshman Kevin Puskaric was MSU's top breaststroke swimmer, placing second in the 100 breast (56.26) before winning the 200 breast (2:01.09).
A trio of sophomores, Krzysztof Olszewski, Jonathan LaRocque and Marcus Poteete, also turned in first-place swims. Olszewski touched the wall first in the mile free with a time of 15:48.87, while LaRocque would win the 200 back (1:53.44). In the very next event, Poteete posted a winning time of 50.28 in the 100 fly.
After junior Danielle Williams placed second off both diving boards, Fuqua clocked a 10:21.62 in the 1,000 free, just edging Purdue's Elyse Dudar. MSU then took the 2-3-4 spots in the 200 free and Fisher swam to a first-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 58.11. Fisher, a Hartland, Wis., native, would later place second in the 200 back (2:06.35). Kiluk followed that with a first-place time of 2:06.32 in the 200 IM, and freshman Rebecca Ebner added a strong swim in the 200 fly, registering a 2:05.83 effort, good for second place.
"Purdue has a strong swimming program, but I felt we performed very well," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "Everyone on our team did a nice job. I'm proud of our coaching staff, athletes, parents and everyone associated with our program."
Both Michigan State squads return to action next weekend in a dual meet at Michigan on Friday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. MSU will then travel to Ohio State for a triangular meet against the host Buckeyes and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 19. The meet is set for a 4 p.m. start.
