EVANSTON, Ill. - Sixth-ranked Michigan State (12-1, 3-0 Big Ten) remained undefeated in Big Ten play with a 3-1 win over Northwestern on Friday. The victory was the ninth straight win for MSU. Freshman Chantae Miller (East Amherst, N.Y.) had a hand in each of the Spartans three goals, recording four points in the game.
Junior Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) started the scoring at 7:11 with a goal off a penalty corner, assisted by Miller. Northwestern would tie the game at 17:54 with a goal from junior Courtney Plaster. The Spartans would take a 2-1 lead at 32:33 with an unassisted goal from Miller. Senior Michelle Ciliberti (Louisville, Ky.) took an initial shot that Northwestern goalie Emily Kyle saved, while Miller picked up the rebound and sent it across the goal line. Michigan State finished the scoring at 46:20 with a goal off a penalty corner. Senior Geraldine Raynor (Maronoera, Zimbabwe) recorded her seventh goal of the season with assists to senior Gwen Riley (Louisville, Ky.) and Miller.
"With a good week of practice, we were well prepared going in," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We had a lot of good moments, but consistency was one of the challenges. It's nice to see the team prevailed, and now we are preparing for Wake Forest."
Michigan State outshot Northwestern 25-6, and led penalty corners in the game 12-2.
Junior Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made two saves in goal for the Spartans, while Kyle made 13 saves.
The Spartans face third-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 11 in a neutral site contest on Northwestern's campus at 3 p.m. ET.
