The Michigan State women's soccer team continued its hot streak Friday (Oct. 17) night in Evanston, Ill., as the Spartans scored three first-half goals and defeated Northwestern, 3-0, to improve to 5-2 in the Big Ten and 13-3 overall. The loss drops the Wildcats to 7-7-1 and 2-4 in conference play.
MSU's 13 wins are the most since Big Ten women's soccer began in 1994 and the most since the 1991 season when it won 14 games. The Spartans have now won five of their last seven contests.
Freshman Laura Heyboer stuck twice in the first half to give her 18 goals on the season and a nation-leading 44 points.
The reigning Big Ten Player of the Week's first goal came just eight minutes into the match as she beat NU goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards one-on-one.
Lauren Sinacola gave MSU a 2-0 advantage in the 30th minute when she scored her second goal in as many games. Heyboer then added another just five minutes later to give MSU a 3-0 lead at the half.
MSU goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege made five saves en route to collecting her seventh shutout of the season. The junior's seven shutouts this season put her in a tie for fourth on the MSU single-season list.
The Spartans will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they take on Wisconsin at 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday (Oct. 19) in Madison, Wis.
