Highlights from the game against Temple
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Eighth-ranked Michigan State (11-1) recorded its second shutout of the season Sunday, a 9-0 win over Temple (4-8), and marked the second straight game the Spartans scored nine goals. Seven different players scored for MSU, with junior Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) leading the team with five points. Classmate Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made a season-high nine saves in goal for her 11th win of the season.
Freshman Chantae Miller (East Amherst, N.Y.) opened the game with a goal at 1:06 off a centering pass from sophomore Jantine Steinmetz (Amstelveen, Netherlands) positioned on the left side. Junior Floor Rijpma (Bunnik, Netherlands) extended her point streak to seven-straight games with a goal a minute and 10 seconds later from a penalty stroke awarded to the Spartans. Senior Gwen Riley (Louisville, Ky.) recorded her third goal in the last two games off a dead ball foul re-start, with an assist to Steinmetz. Michigan State posted another goal at 24:37, with Steinmetz netting a rebound off an initial shot from Miller.
The Spartans led 4-0 at halftime and recorded its fifth straight goal off a penalty corner from Deacon at 46:44. Redshirt freshman Angie Lucik (Emmaus, Pa.) continued the scoring with her third goal of the season at 53:25 off a penalty corner with Deacon assisting. Temple made a goalie change after Lucik's tally, with Sarah Dalrymple coming into the game. A second penalty stroke was awarded to Michigan State at 55:31, with Deacon finding the back of the net and extending her point streak to eight games. Senior Geraldine Raynor (Maronoera, Zimbabwe) rounded out the scoring with two goals. The first came at 61:46 off a penalty corner with assists to redshirt sophomore Joelle van Ierland (Den Dolder, Netherlands) and Miller. The second came at 64:37, an unassisted tally.
Michigan State recorded 26 shots in the game, including 16 in the second half. Temple led in penalty corners with 10 to the Spartans nine.
"It was an exciting game for the parents as it was family weekend and many were in the stands," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "Thanks to a great team effort today, we had the opportunity to play a lot of players off the bench, and that allows us to keep improving as a team. With two big wins in the books it's time to focus on a tough-opponent this weekend in Northwestern, and Wake Forest after that."
The Spartans travel to Evanston, Ill. for two games. The first matchup is on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. against Big Ten foe Northwestern. Michigan State will take-on third-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday at 2 p.m.
