EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Jantine Steinmetz has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week (Nov. 3) after recording four points in two Spartan wins this past weekend. The award is the third of her career.
A native of Amstelveen, Netherlands, Steinmetz led the Spartans in the final Big Ten regular season game over previously unbeaten Penn State, recording the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. She continued her point streak on Sunday, assisting on both of Michigan State's goals in a 2-0 win over Central Michigan.
Steinmetz has six goals and six assists this season for 18 points.
Last season, Steinmetz earned two Offensive Player of the Week honors, and was named the Conference's Rookie of the Year. Steinmetz is the fourth player to garner Player of the Week honors from the Big Ten this season. Goalkeeper Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15, midfielder Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29 and forward Floor Rijpma (Bunnik, Netherlands) earned the award on Oct. 6.
Steinmetz and the Spartans return to action on Thursday, against Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Bloomington, Indiana. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
