ATHENS, Ga. - Michigan State softball (4-9) wrapped up action at the Georgia Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to No. 17 Georgia in the tournament finale. The Bulldogs' two RBI triples and singles outmatched Caitlin Mahoney's solo home run as Georgia improved to 17-5 on the year. MSU continues spring break action with a doubleheader Tuesday, March 5 against Saint Joseph's in Clearwater, Fla. Game one will start at 1 p.m.
With MSU down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Mahoney generated the only scoring offense with her second home run of the season - and the 20th of her career - smashing a dinger over the left-field fence. The homer cut Georgia's lead in half, but the Bulldogs would counter MSU's momentum with a run in each of the fifth and six innings to clinch the 4-1 victory.
At the plate, Gina Mondo led the Spartans against UGA with two hits, while Nikki Nicosia, Kristen Aidem and Jessica Bracamonte also collected hits.
Shae Bass (3-3) threw six innings with four strike outs and walked just one batter, while allowing seven hits.
Over the four-game weekend, Mondo led the team hitting .615 (eight hits, two doubles, one RBI), while Bianca Mejia drove in a team-high three runs with six hits, including a double and a triple. In her three games at the rubber, Lesley Noel recorded 15 strikeouts and walked not a single batter, while giving up 10 runs for a 2.70 tournament ERA.
