MSU Men's Golf Places Second at Boilermaker Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the second consecutive event, the Michigan State men's golf team placed second at the 2008 Boilermaker Invitational, held at the Kampen Course at the Brick Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Spartans posted their fifth-best 54 hole total in program history this weekend, carding a 11-under par 853 (281-282-290). Kent State came-from-behind on the final day with a 15-under par 273, to win the tournament by 11 strokes with a 22-under par 842 (284-285-273). Finishing behind the No. 23-ranked Spartans, was No. 24 Indiana and host Purdue, who tied for fourth at 10-under 854. No. 6 Charlotte was fifth with a six-under 858.
The finish is the fourth-straight top-five placement for MSU and their seventh on the season in 10 events.
Leading the Spartans at the Boilermaker was senior Ryan Brehm who placed fourth at seven-under 209 (71-67-71). Following Brehm was freshman Graham Baillargeon, who was tied for 13th at one-under par 215 (68-73-74), and junior Randy Hutchison, who tied for 17th, one stroke behind Baillargeon at even par 216 (71-75-70). Sophomore Jack Newman was 31st with a two-over 218 (73-70-75) and freshman Payne Gniewek was tied for 46th at five-over 221 (71-72-78).
Indiana's Jorge Campillo led wire-to-wire, taking the individual title with an impressive weekend total of 15-under 201 (63-68-70). John Hahn of Kent State took second with a 11-under par 205 (70-68-67) and Purdue's David Gersztein was third at nine-under 207 (67-76-65).
Michigan State hosts the 2008 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship at Forest Akers West, beginning on Friday, April 25.
