The Michigan State softball team opens fall play this weekend at the 14th annual Traverse City West Collegiate Softball Tournament. On Saturday, the Spartans face Western Michigan at 10:30 a.m., Michigan at noon and Central Michigan at 2 p.m. Michigan State concludes the tournament on Sunday with games at 10:30 a.m. and noon. The games will take place at Traverse City High School in Traverse City, Mich.

MSU returns nine letterwinners this season, including senior Gina Mondo (Orange, Conn.), who finished the 2008 season with the second-highest batting average (.337) on the team. Sophomore Shae Bass (Santee, Calif.) returns to the pitching staff after posting an 8-6 overall record and a 3.93 ERA.

The Spartans conclude fall play on Oct. 5, with two home matchups against Detroit-Mercy and Wayne State.
