EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey freshman Adelle Lever (Blue Bell, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after recording two goals in the Spartans' 3-0 victory over Iowa last Friday. Lever becomes the second Spartan to garner Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades on the season, joining Manouk Vernij (Bleiswijk, Netherlands), a three-time recipient of the award.
"We're very excited for Adelle," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "She continues to be an important member of our team and we're happy she has been recognized by the Big Ten for her achievements."
Friday against the Hawkeyes, Lever scored two of the Spartans' three goals, including the game-winner. Levers first goal came of a deflection off a penalty corner at the 26:40 mark to break a scoreless tie. Her second goal came just before the halftime whistle and pushed the Spartan lead to a insurmountable three goals. The goals were Lever's second and third on the season. Thanks to Levers two goals Michigan State was able to break a four game losing streak against Iowa.
"Adelle has been added to our penalty corner unit and has fit right in," van de Kerkhof said. "She plays what she sees and is very good close to the goal cage."
Lever and the Spartans return to action this weekend when they host a pair of games with Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Michigan. Both of the Spartans' games this weekend will be covered by Big Ten Network and will air on tape delay. Michigan State and Ohio State will play for the Big Ten lead at 3 p.m. on Friday with the Big Ten Network tape delay airing at 6 p.m. on Sunday. While, Michigan State and in-state rival Michigan square off at noon on Sunday with the Big Ten Network tape delay airing at 8 p.m. on Monday.
