EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kalin Lucas led Michigan State with 18 points as the Spartans beat Grand Valley State, 76-53, on Monday night in the final exhibition contest of the season for MSU. Draymond Green posted his second double-double in as many exhibition games with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Raymar Morgan (ankle), Chris Allen (groin) and Delvon Roe (head) sat out the game due to injury.
Michigan State sprinted out to a 21-6 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. Durrell Summers then was hit above the right eye and left the game with 10:16 remaining in the half. The Spartans scored just two points over the next seven minutes as GVSU narrowed the lead to eight points at 23-15, and MSU would take a 31-21 lead into the half.
The Spartans opened the second half on a 13-3 run as Green scored the stanza's first seven points. MSU held a comfortable margin for most of the second half, but could never quite put the Lakers away. Grand Valley State never got closer than 10 points in the second half, but MSU didn't hold more than a 20-point lead until Korie Lucious hit a 3-pointer in the game's final 10 seconds to extend the final margin to 23 points.
Summers did return in the second half, but finished with only five points in 17 minutes of play.
Toreau Brown was the only Laker to score in double figures (10 points). Korie Lucious (12 points) joined Lucas and Green in double figures for the Spartans.
Michigan State will open the regular season on Friday night against Florida Gulf Coast (7 p.m.) at the Breslin Center.
