MIAMI, Fla. - The Michigan State softball team (3-2) finished the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial tournament strong, winning its third-straight game with a 2-0 victory over Temple Sunday morning. Junior Kelly Confer's (Tampa, Fla.) single in the fifth inning sent two Spartans across home plate for the win.
Freshman Lauren Kramer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) started on the mound for the Spartans, marking her first career start. Senior Megan Hair (Torrance, Calif) came in late in the first inning, helping the Spartans get out of a jam early by retiring the three batters she faced and stranding players on second and third.
Kramer returned to the circle for MSU in the second, recording three straight outs to keep the game scoreless. She continued to dominate, holding Temple to just four hits in her five innings pitched for her first win in the Green and White.
The Spartans found the scoresheet in the fifth inning, with senior Gina Mondo (Orange, Conn.) starting off with a triple to deep right, just inside the foul line. Kramer came up to bat next and reached on a walk, followed by sophomore Heidi Purtzer, who advanced to first after being hit by pitch. With the bases loaded, junior Kelly Confer (Tampa, Fla.) entered the game as a pinch hitter, hitting a single up the middle to center field, scoring Mondo and Kramer for a 2-0 lead.
Hair returned to the mound for MSU in the seventh, striking out two of the three batters she faced for her first save of the season.
MSU travels to Fort Myers, Fla., for the FGCU Spring Break Invitational on Friday, Feb. 20 with a game against Bethune-Cookman at 12 p.m., followed by DePaul at 4 p.m.
