EAST LANSING, Mich. - Two members of the Michigan State softball team received postseason accolades from The National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday, May 14. Senior Gina Mondo, who started at second base, and freshman utility player/pitcher Lauren Kramer were named to the 2009 Great Lakes All-Region Team.
Since 1994, the Spartans have placed 17 different players on the Great Lakes All-Region team, and it is the third-straight season at least one player has been honored.
This marks the second-straight season Mondo has been named to the Great Lakes All-Region team. In her final year with the Spartans, Mondo posted a team-high .385 batting average and a .648 slugging percentage. She had a team-best 14 game hitting streak, starting on Feb. 13, and notched a hit in 31 of the 38 games she played in. Mondo recorded 47 hits, 27 runs, nine doubles, seven home runs and 24 RBIs.
Mondo has also established herself in the Michigan State softball record book. She ranks fifth in batting average on MSU's single-season hitting record list with a .385 average this season. With the career statistics, Mondo is fourth in home runs (20), fifth in runs scored (110), eighth in RBIs (98) and is 15th in hits (173).
Kramer played in 47 games for the Spartans and finished the season with a .341 batting average. In 129 at-bats she recorded 44 hits, five doubles, six home runs, 20 RBIs, and led the team with a .426 on-base percentage. Kramer also started in the circle for MSU in 21 games and appeared in 38 games. She pitched a team-high eight complete games, 151 innings and posted 125 strikeouts. Kramer pitched two shutout games, split two other shutouts and won 10 games in her first season with the Spartans. She has also made her way into the Spartan record books, as she is seventh in appearances on MSU's single season list, and was three shy of reaching the top-10 in single-season strikeouts.
On April 18, Kramer recorded a career-high nine strikeout in a 4-3 loss to No. 23 Iowa in 10 innings, and tied the mark in a 1-0 win over Minnesota. Kramer led the Spartans to a 2-1 win over No. 8 Michigan in the season finale, hitting the two-run homer for MSU. She also pitched the complete game, striking out six and not allowing a walk.
