EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team is in 15th place after 54 holes of the 2009 NCAA Championship, by Georgetown University at he 6,443-yard Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. After Thursday's third round of 27-over par 925, the Spartans, ranked No. 21 by Golfweek/Sagarin, currently sit at 61-over par 925 (307-303-315).
"We played some sloppy golf today," said Michigan State head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "We hit some poor shots and made some bad decisions out there. However, we had a great practice session afterwards. We are still close to where we wanted to be when we began. We are having a great time and everyday is a learning experience for us. None of these girls have been here before."
Freshman Lindsey Solberg shot the low round of the day for the Spartans with a four-over 76. Solberg, also the top MSU golfer for the week, is tied for 34th at 12-over 228 (73-79-76). She began the day with four straight pars, but bogeys on four of her next seven holes moved her to four-over for the day. After a pair of pars, Solberg birdied the par-4 14th, her sixth of the week, but followed with a bogey before pars on her final three holes of the day. Through 54 holes this week, Solberg has avoided posting anything worse than a bogey.
Junior Laura Kueny is tied for 47th overall at 14-over par 230 (74-76-80) after a third round of eight-over 80. Kueny opened with a front side five-over 41, including a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole, and seemed to turn her game around on the back side with pars on her first eight holes, but she closed with a triple bogey on the 18th. Kueny has a team-best seven birdies through 54 holes.
Sophomore Michelle Bowles is tied for 87th overall at 20-over 236 (80-75-81), while classmate Aimee Neff is tied for 97th at 22-over 238 (80-73-85) and freshman Shannon Warner is tied for 111th at 28-over 244 (83-83-78). Warner had the second-best round of the day for the Spartans with a six-over 78, including birdies on the par-5 seventh and 17th holes.
"Shannon is a young freshman and is learning more and more everyday about herself and her game," said Slobodnik-Stoll. "We needed her score today so it was nice to see her keep improving."
No. 3 USC vaulted to the top of the leaderboard today with a five-over par 293. The Trojans are 25-over for the championship, holding a two shot lead over No. 1 Arizona State and four ahead of No. 2 UCLA. Individually, USC's Jennifer Song has a two stroke lead on the field at even-par 216.
Michigan State's final round begins at 8:20 a.m. off the first hole. The Spartans will be paired with No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 15 Georgia.
The 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes of tomorrow's final round will be available to watch live from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. at Golfstat.com.
