East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State wrapped up its two-game road trip on Sunday with a 1-1 stalemate in double overtime at the University of Minnesota. The Spartans are now 9-4-3 overall, 3-2-2 in Big Ten play.
All the scoring in the 110-minute game came in the early minutes of play. MSU jumped on the board just three minutes in, as sophomore Olivia Stander finished off a pass from Hannah Peterson for her eighth goal of the season. Stander's goal came at 2:58.
Just over two minutes later, the Gophers lined up for a corner kick. Molly Rouse converted for her sixth goal of the season, off an assist from Kylie Kallman.
The fans may have been anticipating a higher-scoring affair due to the early tallies, but the teams went through another 105 minutes without finding the back of the net.
Minnesota held a distinct advantage in corner kicks, taking 14 compared to just two for the visiting Spartans. Minnesota outshot MSU 20-11, and 11-7 in shots on net. MSU was also whistled for twice as many fouls as their hosts (16-8).
While Minnesota had two shots on net in the first overtime to push Jill Flietstra's save total to 10 on the day, the Spartans put four on net in the second overtime period, playing aggressive to the final whistle in an attempt to gain the golden goal. Cat Parkhill made five saves, and one was credited to the team for a goal-line save.
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend when it hosts Illinois and Iowa at DeMartin Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively. On Sunday, MSU's four seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
