
Four Wrestlers Win Titles at Eastern Michigan Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Four Michigan State wrestlers won individual titles Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open as the Spartans opened the 2010-11 season.
Dan Osterman (149 pounds) and Michael McClure (heavyweight) claimed titles in the open bracket, while Luke Jones (174) and Nick McDiarmid (197) took first in freshman/sophomore division.
For the second straight year, Osterman won an individual title at the EMU Open, this time at 149 pounds in the open division after claiming the 133-pound bracket last year. Osterman rolled through the tournament, defeating Eric Filipowicz of Navy, 5-2, Jeremy Espinoza of Findlay, 4-2, and Corey Phillips of Eastern Michigan, 6-3, in the championship match.
Also in the 149-pound open division, Collin Dozier took third place by going 6-1 in the tournament. Dozier fell in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, but rebounded with five wins in the consolation bracket, including a 14-2 major decision win over Navy's Eric Filipowicz in the third-place match.
At 125 pounds in the open division, Eric Olanowski received a bye, then recorded an 11-2 victory over Findlay's Nick Weisjahn. After falling to Eastern Michigan's Jared Germaine, 13-6, Olanowski bounced back with an 8-4 victory over Greg Egbert of EMU, but then fell to Navy's Allan Stein, 14-7, to drop into the seventh-place match.
Philip Khozein won two matches at 157 pounds in the open divison, one in the championship bracket and one in the consolation bracket, to advance to the seventh-place match.
In the 174 open bracket, Curran Jacobs went 3-2 to place fourth.
After dropping his first match, Ian Hinton fought back to win four straight matches to take third place in the 184 open division, including a 6-4 victory over Kyle Reid of McKendree in the third-place match.
In the 197 open division, Tyler Dickenson won his first three matches before falling in the championship match, 4-2 in overtime, to Michigan's Anthony Biondo.
MSU had three heavyweights in the open division, and the championship match pitted two Spartans, as McClure edged Steve Andrus, 4-2, to claim first. Joe Rizqallah, who fell to McClure in the semifinals, 4-2, bounced back to take third place.
In the freshman/sophomore division, Brenan Lyon placed fourth at 125 pounds, while his brother, Chris, advanced to the seventh-place match.
At 133 pounds, Josh Harper took sixth, while Ryan Watts also placed sixth at 149 pounds by winning four matches.
The Spartans had a strong showing in the 157 bracket, as Sean McMurray placed second, Troy Lamson placed third and Robert Nash placed fourth. McMurray had two falls and beat Nash in the semifinals, 6-2. Lamson went on to beat Nash in the third-place match.
At 174, Jones won all five of his matches to win the freshman/sophomore division, topping it off with a 6-0 victory over Eastern Michigan's Mike Curby. Two other Spartans placed in the 174 bracket: Nick Kaczanowski (third) and Eric Ford (fourth).
In the 184 bracket, John Rizqallah won seven matches to take third place. He recorded a fall over Cumberland's Scott Stewart in just 30 seconds to finish the day in the third-place match.
McDiarmid, who was a 2010 high school national champion, continued his winning ways to start his college career, winning all four of his matches to win the 197 freshman/sophomore title. He defeated Jacob Bradford of Lindsey Wilson College, 6-2, in the championship match.
Note: The seventh-place matches were not wrestled in either bracket.
